The Law Completed!?
Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that
I came to destroy The Law or The Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to Fulfill.
For assuredly, I say to you, till Heaven and Earth pass away, one jot or one
tittle will by no means pass from The Law till all is fulfilled. Whoever
therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so shall
be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he
shall be called Great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I say to you that unless
your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, you
will by no means enter into The Kingdom of Heaven.” Then JESUS goes on for the
rest of The Sermon on The Mount to tell us how to keep the commandments.
Everything that JESUS said to the Jews applies to all Christians, Jewish or
Gentile!
Most people quote verse 17, “Do
not think that I came to destroy The Law or The Prophets. I did not come to
destroy but to Fulfil.” Then talk about how now Christians do not have to keep
the Law; that is not what JESUS said! Then they quote Paul in Romans 6:14 “For
sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under Law but under
Grace.” Go back and study that in context, Paul is not talking about The Torah,
he is talking about the law of sin and death which every human being is subject
to! Paul clarified that in Romans 8:1-4 “There is therefore now no condemnation
to those who are in CHRIST JESUS, who do not walk according to the flesh, but
according to the SPIRIT. For The Law of The SPIRIT of Life in CHRIST JESUS
has made me free from the law of sin and death. (This is Salvation, JESUS
conquered sin and death and because His SPIRIT lives in us (1 Corinthians
3:16-17) now we have the victory over them, 1 Corinthians 15:57.)
Law verses Grace!
The Law of Moses – The Torah was
given to Moses for the Hebrew people to show them what sin was and to show them
how to live without sinning. The Hebrew people and everyone else could not live
according to the Law without serving The Law rather than serving JEHOVAH!
Romans 8:1-4; Colossians 2:11-23.
Sabbath: The Law says we should
honor the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8-11), but Christians say we do not have to honor
the Sabbath, that we honor Sunday the day CHRIST Rose from the dead. JESUS said
that “man was not made for the sabbath but the sabbath for man (Mark 2:27-28).”
And He pointed out that every sabbath the priests violated it (Matthew 12:5),
meaning the sabbath was instituted so that man would rest at least one day a
week (Colossians 2:16-17), as GOD did after He Created everything that exists
(Genesis 1:31-2-2). So every Christian should have one day a week that he
dedicates to GOD and rests from his work.
Food: The Law gave the Hebrew
people rules about food and eating. Remember there was virtually no food
preservation except salt. So GOD told them of foods that they should eat and
how to eat them. GOD also told them which foods to avoid, because they were scavengers, they ate dead things
themselves, etc. Mark 7:14-19; Acts 10:9-16; Romans 14:1-3. So thank GOD for
His Great Provision and eat healthily 1 Corinthians 3:16-17.
Baptism: Under the law there were
many cleansing regulations for the priests (Exodus 29:1-4) and those who became
physically unclean, like touching the dead or body waste, etc. (Leviticus
11:24-25). John The Baptist was command by GOD to baptize people for the
remission of sin which came from repentance (Luke 1:76-80, 3:1-6). JESUS was
baptized for Righteousness’ sake (Matthew 3:13-17). So when JESUS commanded us
to baptize new believers (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:14-18; Acts 2:41) it was
not an option and as JESUS’ disciples we are commanded to keep all His
Commandments (there are 50). Romans 6:1-10; Colossians 2:11-12.
So, JESUS fulfilled the regulation of the law that no human could and
took upon Himself the punishment for our sin so that when we stand before GOD’s
Judgment we will not be judged about the Law but about our Works as Believers
(1 Corinthians 3:11-15)
