Prayer For America
By Benjamin Franklin
Every July 4th,
Americans celebrate being in a free, independent country. Yet many important
events occurred in the years following 1776 to shape how we
were to be free. One such event took place 11 years later. Delegates were
working to craft what would become our Constitution, but progress was slow.
That's when 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin introduced a
motion for daily prayer. In it, he stated: |
We have been assured,
Sir, in the sacred writings, that "except the Lord build the House they
labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe
that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no
better, than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial
local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall
become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. |
The delegates were
there because the current state of the nation under the Articles of Confederation
was not satisfactory. As they sought to improve how things were done,
Franklin used Scripture to remind them Who they needed to look to first. As we seek
improvements in our country today, let's continue looking to God and His
Word. Here are some ways you can do that today: |
