Amos Chapter 5

 

5:1-3 Chapter 5 is an interesting passage of Scripture to Israel that also applies to The Church: It opens with a warning of GOD’s lamentation against Israel. “Hear this Word which I take up against you, this lamentation, House of Israel. The maiden of Israel has fallen not to rise again. She lies forsaken on her land, with no one to lift her up. For thus said The LORD JEHOVAH. ‘The city that goes out by a thousand had a hundred left and that which goes out by a hundred has ten left to the house of Israel!’”

 

5:4-6 The Call: “For thus said JEHOVAH to the house of Israel, ‘Seek Me and Live!’ But do not seek Bethel, nor enter Gilgal, nor pass over to Beersheba; for Gilgal shall certainly go into exile and Bethel become a non-entity! Seek JEHOVAH and Live lest He break out like fire upon the house of Joseph and shall consume it, with no one to quench it in Bethel!’” JEHOVAH GOD was reminding the people of Israel to seek Him first and not to seek comfort or safety or provision in the prominent cities of Israel. (Matthew 6:25-34)

 

5:7-13 Through Amos, JEHOVAH kept reminding the people Who He Is and of His Judgment against sinners: “You who are turning right-ruling (Justice) to wormwood (poisonous bitterness) and have cast down righteousness to the earth…Therefore the wise keep silent at that time, for it is an evil time.” (The Church is supposed to be proclaiming Salvation through JESUS CHRIST that leads to Repentance, Mark 16:14-18.)

 

5:14-15 JEHOVAH speaks of Blessings: “Seek Good and not evil so that you Live! Let JEHOVAH GOD of Heaven’s Armies be with you, as you have spoken!” (Even today Christians call out for GOD’s Blessings while they harbor sin in their life or ignore the sin around them in the Church.) “Hate evil and Love Good and set up right-ruling in the gate (The gate is the place of government and business). It might be that JEHOVAH GOD of Heaven’s Armies shows favor to the remnant of Joseph!”

 

5:16-24The call to Repentance: “Therefore JEHOVAH GOD of Heaven’s Armies, JEHOVAH, said this, ‘There is wailing in all open squares and in all the streets they say, “Alas! Alas!” and shall call the farmer to mourning and skilled lamenters to wailing…I have hated, I have despised your festivals and I am not pleased with your assemblies...Let Right-ruling roll on like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.’”

 

5:25-27 Judgment: “’You brought Me sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, House of Israel, but you took up Sikkuth (Tabernacle of Moloch) your king; and Kiyyum (Chiun), your idols, your astral mighty ones which you made for yourselves! Therefore I shall send you into exile beyond Damascus.’ Said JEHOVAH GOD of Heaven’s Armies – His Name.”
