1 Timothy 4:12-16
“Let no one despise your youth,
but be an example to the Believers in Word,
in Conduct, in Love, in Spirit, in Faith, in Purity. Till I come, give
attention to Reading, to Exhortation, to Doctrine (teaching). Do not
neglect The Gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the
laying on of the hands of the eldership. Meditate on these things; give
yourself entirely to them that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed
to yourself and to the Doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will
save both yourself and those who hear you!”
Paul is giving Timothy personal
instruction as his disciple on how to be a Christian! These truths apply to
everyone who is a Believer in JESUS, because we are all JESUS’ disciples! (Mark
8:34-38; John 8:28-32)
“Let no one despise your youth,
but be an example…” I do not know how old Timothy was at the time of this
letter, but he was a youth when he first started being a disciple of Paul. (Acts
16:1-3; 2 Timothy 1:5-7, 13-14: 3:15) While age is not a qualifier for
ministry, maturity is, Timothy’s maturity came form his youth under his mother and
grandmother, then his time with Paul on his travels.
“…but be an example to the
believers in Word, in Conduct, in Love, In Spirit, in Faith, in Purity.” All of
these he would have learned as a disciple of Paul. (Philippians 2:12-14, 3:1-11)
Paul was always living according to his teachings, a couple of times Paul and
his team spent more than a year teaching the believers in a community. (Acts
19:1-10, 20:31) The Word, John 8:31-32, 14:23-24; in Conduct, John 5:1-14, 8:1-12;
in Love, Matthew 5:43-46, 22:36-40, John 13:34; in Spirit, John 4:19-26; in
Faith, Mark 9:14-29, Luke 17:5-10, 18:8; in Purity, Matthew 6:22-23, Luke 11:33-36.
“Till I come, give attention to
Reading, to Exhortation, to Doctrine (teaching)…” Paul is reminding Timothy to keep learning, growing
in Faith and doing the work of the Kingdom of GOD. Reading, Matthew 6:33, 1
Timothy 4:1-5; Exhortation, Mark 16:15-16, 1 Timothy 4:6-11; Doctrine, 2
Timothy 3:14-17, 4:1-5.
“Do not neglect The Gift that is
in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of
the eldership.” (John 21:15-19 JESUS Restores Peter and He will Restore us,
James 5:19-2014-17, 1 John 2:1-2.)
“Meditate on these things; give
yourself entirely to them that your progress may be evident to all.” (Philippians
4:8-9) This is the work of warfare, 2 Corinthians 10:3-6, 2 Timothy 2:14-19.
“Take heed to yourself and to the
Doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and
those who hear you!” (1 Timothy 6:11-16, 20-21) This is the command of JESUS to
His Followers, John 15:1-17. If we do
not maintain our personal walk with JESUS we will lead others astray, 2
Corinthians 3:1-6, Philippians 3:12-4:2.
