Hosea 5

Hosea 5

:1-3 “Hear this O priests! Take heed O house of Israel!

Give ear O house of the king! For to you is The Judgment, because you have been a snare to Mizpah and a net spread on Tabor. The revolters* are deeply involved in slaughter*, though I rebuke them all. I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me; for now O Ephraim, you commit harlotry; Israel is defiled.” The revolters is an interesting term, in our western culture we think of those who revolt against an oppressive government or authoritarian parents, etc., but GOD is talking about those who revolt against Himself, those who refuse to obey His commands. (Isaiah 29:13-15; Amos 5:10-15)

:4-5 “They do not direct their deeds to toward turning to their GOD (Their deeds will not allow them to turn – they are so sinful they cannot even think about repenting), for the spirit of harlotry* (whoredoms – not sexual but idolatry with demons) is in their midst, and they do not know JEHOVAH. The pride of Israel testifies to his face; therefore Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity; Judah also stumbles with them.” (Romans 1:16-32 – there comes a point when GOD knows there is no repentance in their heart)

:6-7 “With their flocks and herds they go to seek JEHOVAH, but they will not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them! They have dealt treacherously with JEHOVAH, for they have begotten pagan (Lit. strange) children. Now a New Moon** shall devour them and their heritage.” (Proverbs 1:20-33; Jeremiah 3:19-20 – religious activity is worthless)

JEHOVAH considered Israel as His spouse and the Children of Israel as His Children!

:8-9 “Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah! The trumpet in Ramah! Cry aloud at Beth Aven***: ‘Look behind you, Benjamin!’ Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke; among the tribes of Israel I make known what is sure (KJV “…that which shall surely be...”.) (Joel 2:1-2 – GOD’s warning to prepare for His Judgement, there will be no stay of execution.

:10-12 “The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark: (Deuteronomy 19:14;  Proverbs 23:10-11) I will pour out My Wrath on them like water. Ephraim is oppressed and broken in Judgement, because he willingly walked by human precept. (Deuteronomy 28:32-33) Therefore I will be to Ephraim like a moth;**** and to the House of Judah like rottenness.” In other words, JEHOVAH will pull away from Ephraim and Judah, leaving them to their own desires. (Proverbs 1:20-33; Romans 1:18-32)

:13 “When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to King Jareb; yet he cannot cure you nor heal you of your wound.” (Jeremiah 30:12-13) The Church often sends to the earthly institutions of teaching and healing; but being they are institutions based in sin they cannot help or cure that which is spiritual.

:14-15 “For I will be like a lion to the house of Judah. (Lamentations 3:10-12) I, even I, will tear them and go away; I will take them away and no one shall rescue. I will return again to My Place till they acknowledge their offense (Lit. become guilty or bear punishment). (Isaiah 38:10-14) Then they will seek My face; in their affliction they will earnestly seek Me!” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14) There is no salvation, healing or deliverance without repentance. It is not just asking for GOD’s Forgiveness (like the Israelites often did) but actually changing from a sinful lifestyle to a righteous lifestyle.

*Revolters = ţ or çêţ; a departure from right, i.e. :sin:-revolter, that turn aside. From sûwţ or çûwţ; a primitive root; to detrude (force down, thrust out, push away), i.e. (intransitively and figuratively) become derelict (wrongly practice; namely idolatry):-turn aside to.
